Privacy: what this site stores, which is almost nothing

No cookies

No cookies are set. There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to: a banner that asks permission for cookies a site does not set is theatre, and it is the most common form of it on the web.

Nothing is written to local storage or session storage either, with one exception that never leaves the browser: if a reader changes the controls on the pairing bench, those settings live only in the page while it is open and are gone when the tab closes.

No account, no form, no message

There is nothing to sign into, nothing to subscribe to, and no form anywhere on the site. There is no mailbox on this domain and no contact form, which is why the page at the contact address gives the route to verifying an entry independently rather than offering somewhere to send a message. Nothing about a reader is collected because there is no mechanism by which it could be.

Nothing loads from anywhere else

Every asset a page needs comes from this domain. Every typeface is served from /assets/fonts/ rather than from a font network, so no font provider is told which pages a reader opens. There is no advertising, no tag manager, no embedded video, no social widget, no comment thread and no embedded map. A page here makes requests to no host but this one.

That is a technical decision as much as a privacy one, it is also why the pages load as fast as they do, but the privacy consequence is the more important of the two.

Page counting

Nothing on this site counts visits at present. If that changes, what follows describes what the counting would record, and it is designed so that it cannot identify anybody: no cookie set, no identifier stored in the browser, nothing written that persists between one visit and the next. What would be recorded is the kind of thing a server log holds anyway: which page was opened, roughly when, which page it was reached from, and the size of the screen it was opened on.

Naming the current state plainly, because this page is only worth reading if it is accurate: no counter is wired at present, and nothing on this site contacts anything but this domain. The only counting that happens is whatever the web server records in its own logs, described below. If a counter is ever switched on it will be GoatCounter: open-source, cookieless, storing no personal data and retaining no IP address, which is why it would still need no consent banner. This page changes in the same edit that switches it on.

There is no profile, no cross-site tracking and no data sold, shared or passed to an advertising network, because none of those things is possible with what is collected.

Server logs

Like any website, this one is served by a web server that keeps operational logs. Those exist to keep the site running and to see when something breaks. They are not used to build a picture of any reader and nothing is joined to them.

Links to other sites

Several entries link out: to the catalogues that list the display typefaces recorded here, and to foundries and reference sources named in the text. Those sites have their own practices and this page does not describe them. Following a link means leaving this site, and what happens there is between the reader and that site.

The links are plain links. Nothing is tagged, no identifier travels with a click, and no referral or affiliate relationship exists with anything linked from this reference.

Children

The site is a technical reference and is not directed at children. Since nothing is collected from anybody, nothing is collected from a child either.

If this changes

If a form, a mailbox, an account or a third-party embed is ever added, this page changes first and the revision date on it moves. The date shown at the top of this entry is the date it was last revised, the same convention every entry on the reference uses.
